It’s not possible for the human mind to imagine a mother of the age of 5; well at least I found it difficult to believe when I saw the article on digg. Well Digg does not have pictures; all it took me to believe that a 5 year, 7 month and 21 days old Peruvian girl called Lina Medina gave birth to a child was a photograph that, I got to know on wikipedia, was taken around the beginning of April, 1939, when Medina was seven and a half months into pregnancy. Taken from Medina’s left side, it shows her standing naked in front of a wall. This is the only published photograph of Lina taken during her pregnancy. This photograph is of significant value because it proves Medina’s pregnancy as well as the extent of her physiological development. In 1939, a man from the Andean village of Ticrapo carried his five-year-old daughter Lina into a hospital in the town of Pisco, Peru. He assumed that Lina had an a large abdomen tumor that was, but upon examination, the doctors learned that the swelling was not actually a tumor.Dr. Gérado Lozada was told by Lina’s father that she had been having regular periods since age three, but they had stopped about 7 1/2 months prior to the visit. After listening to the young girl’s abdomen with a stethoscope he heard a tiny second heartbeat. The X-Ray confirmed the doctors’ astonishment, Lina Medina was about seven months pregnant at the age of 5. A month and a half later, on May 14, (Mother’s Day) 1939, she gave birth to a boy by a caesarean section, it was necessary due to the small size of her pelvis. The surgery was performed by Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalleu, with Dr. Colretta providing anaesthesia. Gerardo was born weighing 2.7 kg (5.8 lb) at birth, named after Lina’s doctor. He was raised believing that Lina was his sister, but found out that she was his mother at the age of ten. Gerardo grew up healthy but died in 1979 at the age of 40, the cause was bone marrow disease. According to Jose Sandoval, an obstetrician who was interested in Lina Medina’s case, authored a book about her in 2002. He claimed that Lina was a psychologically normal child who displayed no other unusual medical symptoms. He also stated that she preferred playing with dolls rather than her own child.
